What is a Bondage Collar?

A bondage collar is worn around the neck of a submissive. To wear the bondage collar is to be collared. The bondage collar is meant to signify being owned by a Dom or Top. They can also enhance positions during BDSM play, improve posture, leash play, roleplay, and more. Bondage collars may also be worn to make a fashion statement.

Bondage collars look similar to a dog collar and are made from leather or a leather-like material. They may be accessorized with rings, hooks, locks, buckles, and more. Some collars are designed for play, while others are for more permanent use, just like a wedding ring. When used as a symbol of a relationship between a submissive and Dominant, the collar represents trust, connection, ownership, and more.

Collaring happens when a sub has completed their training under a Dom. Some couples choose to have a collaring ceremony in celebration of collaring. The sub earns their collar through dedication, hard work, and devotion to their Top.

There is proper etiquette that must be followed when it comes to bondage collars. If you are a single Dom and see a sub wearing a collar, you should not approach without permission from their Top. If you are a sub wearing a collar, you should not take it off without your Dominant’s permission. To do so would be disrespectful.

Bondage collars may include posture collars, dog collars, leather collars, ribbon collars, day collars, metal collars, bracelets or anklets, rings, tattoos, scarification, and branding.

Bondage Collar Types

While some may wear a bondage collar for style, in the BDSM community, collars take a different meaning. Some different types of bondage collars include:

  • Posture collar: a thicker collar that covers the neck. Posture collars restrict movement and enhance a posture during play.
  • Play collar: Dog collars, leather collars, and ribbon collars, primarily worn as a statement.
  • Protection collar: A collar worn during kink parties or in dungeons that signals to single Doms that the sub is not owned, but they are not free to approach or touch the sub. Protection collars are often dog collars or leather collars.
  • Consideration collar: The consideration collar is like a promise ring. It signifies that the Dom and sub are advancing their relationship towards ownership.
  • Training collar: A leather collar worn to signify the submissive is in training.
  • Ownership or slave collar: The Dom grants this collar to their submissive after it is carefully earned. The ownership collar signifies that the sub is owned.
