What is a Bondage Crop?

Impact play is when a consenting sub asks to be struck by a consenting partner (Top) for pleasure. The act may be for the sexual gratification of the sub or both the Top and sub. Impact play is performed on areas of the body with muscle tissue or fat, such as the buttocks or upper back, between the shoulders. It requires experience and skill to ensure the blows remain only in safe spaces of the body. Impact play is often performed using a tool such as a crop, whip, cane, or paddle.

A crop can provide a pleasurable stinging sensation, which can vary from heavy to light, depending on how hard the Top hits. Bruising will happen on the sub’s body. The crop includes a long, flexible shaft, a handle at the bottom, and a loop (keeper) at the top. The crop is traditionally made of leather or a leather-like material. Crops are recommended for those who enjoy spanking and are ready to experiment with something that delivers more impact.

How Do You Use a Bondage Crop?

First, as with any impact play or sexual act, ensure that your partner is consenting and desires the use of a crop. Communicate with each other openly about intensity, limits, and where the Top should strike the crop. Safewords can be used, such as “green” to continue, “yellow” to continue at the same intensity level, and “red” to stop. The crop should not be used on any part of the body where the skin is directly on top of the bone. The neck, abdomen, kidneys, tailbone, hip bones, collar bones and head should be avoided. Some subs find being struck by a crop on the buttocks, upper back, thighs, and breasts to be pleasurable. At the beginning of impact play, the sub should lay down on their stomach or bent over the edge of a bed or bench. The crop should be introduced slowly and gently, building with intensity and rhythm over time.

Types of Bondage Crops

Crops can be purchased at both sex shops and equestrian stores. It is better to carefully inspect the crop before purchase to ensure it will not become unraveled over time and does not have any rough edges. Roughness is often a sign of a cheaply made crop. These rough edges can also unnecessarily wound the body. Some different types of crops include:

  • Basic crop: A basic crop is approximately 26-inches in length, has a rubbery handle, and a narrow, rectangular-shaped keeper.
  • Wide crop: Like a basic crop, the wide crop has a wider keeper, which stings less upon impact.
  • Narrow crop: The keeper of the narrow crop is slim and delivers a stinging sensation.
  • Slapper crop: The slapper crop’s keeper consists of two pieces of leather that slap together upon impact.
  • Lollycrop: The keeper of the lollycrop is made of rubber and delivers an intense sensation.
